Legionnaire's Disease

Legionnaire's disease is a lung infection (pneumonia) caused by a bacterium called Legionella pneumophilia. The name Legionella pneumophilia was derived from the original outbreak at the 1976 American Legion Convention in Philadelphia.

Sources and Causes

Legionnaire's diseaseis caused by bacteria that belong to the Legionellaceae. The major source for Legionella is water distribution systems of large buildings such as hotels and hospitals. Cooling towers have been long thought to be a major of Legionella. Other sources include mist machines, humidifiers, whirlpool spas and hot springs.

The figure represents lifecycle of Legionella in a building water system.

1. Amoebaegraze on biofilm consuming bacteria for food but are
2. infected by legionella which
3. grows intracellularly and then
4. overwhelms its protozoan host cell, differentiates into mobile cells and
5. causes lysis of the host cell releasing hundreds or thousands of infective progenyin search of new hosts to infect
